Welcome to Shabby Sheek Abroad— stories from a single mom and her teenager packing down to the most essential (okay maybe a couple extra pairs of shoes than is most essential), leaving Bozeman for months at a time, and documenting what it actually takes to live, work, go to school, and travel slowly.
This isn't a "quit your job and see the world" blog. It's proof that the boring, deliberate stuff — a spreadsheet, a packing list, a curriculum plan — is exactly what buys you the freedom to be spontaneous once you're actually out there.

Plan before we wander
Every destination starts with a spark of curiosity, tons of research, a budget, and a plan — because structure built ahead of time is what actually lets us go with the flow once we land.

Follow their lead
Worldschooling isn't a curriculum binder, it's paying attention. I want at least some modicum of buy-in from my teenager before I set the itinerary. But the magic is in the moments when she chooses the location and guides the trip. More on that later….

Leave room to wander
Plans get us in the door. But what happens once we're there — the accidental wrong turn, the local who gives better advice than any app — that's worth the time on excel spreadsheets. But the key building enough space for at leas an ounce of surrender.

Home base recharge
The older I get the more I crave the comfort of my own couch, and even if recharging at home is what fuels the wanderlust, this step is essential and make all of this possible in the first place.
WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THIS BLOG
Most travel content picks a lane: budget hacks, or dreamy photos, or homeschool curriculum. Shabby Sheek Abroad doesn't, because real life doesn't. This is a my honest account of remote work and travel as a solo mom with a teenager — the freedom of it and the logistics of it — alongside a kid's-eye view of learning through food, art, and getting a little bit lost. And running underneath all of it: a Bozeman rental house that proves you don't have to choose between building a home and leaving it.
